New Friends, Old Friends

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the Private Show on Thursday. Cassie at’ Off the Wall’ hung the work beautifully, putting both artists’ work to the best advantage. It must have been a daunting prospect as there’s a huge contrast in styles. If Cassie is able to let me have photographs I will post them here.

It was great meeting Sarah Jane Brown and seeing her exciting paintings in the flesh. It is always interesting to learn how other artists go about the sheer practicalities of producing artwork and getting it shown.

We also met up with a fellow student at Norwich School of Art. We haven’t had any contact with him since 1976, so we all had a bit of a back story. I half expected him to be there as we knew he was based in Cardiff, but it came out of the blue for Stephen. We met his wife Jill and went back to their home for tea more catching up. Thanks for the lovely home made biscuits Jill.

The Fabulous Spectre

Now, I think that “All is not as it seems” is the title. It’s the title on the printed Private Show invitation cards that the gallery sent us, but on their website they’ve put “it’s not all as it seems”.

It’s a joint show with Stephen’s work and , in complete contrast, the landscape paintings of Sarah Jane Brown.

The Private Show is next Thursday 10 May, 6-8pm. It’ll be a bit of a rush but I think we’ll get there on time.

Meet Yasuka

‘The Messenger’, which depicts Yasuka and her paper bird, is one of three drawings by Stephen Lovatt on show at the Society of Graphic Fine Art’s drawing exhibition in Ilminster running from 16 to 28 April.

As well as seeing the full-size drawing of Yasuka there will be an opportunity to meet exhibiting artists on Sunday 15 April 3 -5 pm at
The Meeting House Arts Centre, East Street, Ilminster, Somerset TA19 0AN

With any luck there will be tea and cake again!

Sculpture at the Botanic Garden

I’m one of the invited artists exhibiting at the Bristol University Botanic Garden this weekend. I’m showing table-top pieces on the theme of ’Infestations’ in the Linnaeus Study Room where teas will be served while the show is on. I’ll try to get along as much as possible this weekend and I will certainly be there tomorrow afternoon and on Easter Sunday.

All Hung Up

The car was loaded fit to bursting but we got everything in and made it to Ilminster in very good time. It’s only an hour from Bristol even when driving with EXTREME care to avoid rattling the artworks. Helping us to get everything right were Sue and John Bishop and Ann Palmer of the Ilminster Arts Centre management team. They certainly helped us to get the best out of the beautiful gallery space. Energy levels were kept up with tea and buttered scones… more tomorrow.

Fabrication of Reality

We are so glad that we made the effort in 2010 – 2011 to ensure that we have an efficient studio space up and running. It is paying dividends now as although it is pretty chaotic on the home front, our art production and exhibition planning has been able to continue relatively unhindered.

Unfortunately it is promotional activity that has suffered (see my previous post), which is why I have only just flagged up on the right sidebar that we have a joint exhibition starting NEXT WEEK at the lovely gallery space in ‘The Meeting House’ Arts Centre in Ilminster.

If you can get down to the Opening/Preview Event which is next Sunday 4 March between 3.00 and 5.00pm it will be lovely to see you, and we will ply you with tea and cake. I have often said that I think that all private views should have tea and cake rather than salty nibbles and wine and this time I got my way! And of course, the artwork is gorgeous. Here’s a pic to whet your appetite.

Family commitments have meant that it has been difficult for me to keep this blog up to date. Which is why I did not put up posts for two events at the end of last year. Stephen had new paintings in the Christmas Show at the Off the Wall Gallery in Cardiff and both Susan and Stephen had work on show at the RWA Autumn Exhibition 2011. Apologies for the lack of information, things are calming down a bit now and I hope to be a bit more on the ball.

Summer Exhibition and August Extension

Stephen has two paintings on show in the Summer Exhibition at the
Off the Wall Gallery in Cardiff. The Private view is on Friday 5 August 6.00 – 8.00pm, we hope to be there (fingers crossed). The exhibition closes on 13 September. To book for the Private View email art@galleryoffthewall.com

His solo show at ‘The Gallery’ in Chard, Somerset, has been extended and is now running to 3 September. So if you are passing through Somerset or Cardiff this summer do call in and take a look.

The Gallery, Preview Evening

I understand from Stephen that the preview event yesterday evening at The Gallery in Chard went very well. He says that Tracey and Simon had done a lovely job with the hanging and everything looked really good. The evening was quite busy and Stephen enjoyed talking with everyone who came. People seemed genuinely intrigued by the paintings and asked some very perceptive questions. And work sold on the evening, which is always a good sign.

Sunday Closure, an apology

If you tried in vain to visit Stephen’s show at the Glass Room on a Sunday last month we can only apologise, but the fault was not ours. Apparently the management of the Colston Hall decided to close the building on Sundays this summer and it came into effect in July. Unfortunately they failed to inform the organiser at the Glass Room of the change. So she told us that it was open every day and we duly put that on the publicity – all the flyers, emails and press releases.

There have been some very interesting comments in the comments book. We will publish them here soon.
